Sometime in the early 1960s Porsche decided the Type 356 had reached the end of its life and planned to cease production, however there was an elephant in the room - a larger 911-shaped one to be exact. With the 356 gone, the company’s sole product would have been the then-new 911 and this was rather concerning for the powers that be given the considerable price increase of the 911 over the 356. The potential loss in sales and narrowing of the brand appeal and client base led Porsche executives to plan a new entry-level model based on the 911. This new car combined a 911 body shell with a 1.6 litre flat-four engine in place of the thirstier and heavier flat-six. Porsche soon had a car that had better weight distribution, handling and fuel economy when compared to the 911 and its styling, build quality and pricing point made it a very attractive car to new and old customers alike. So much so, it actually outsold the 911 during the first few years of production, nearly 30,000 examples over its 5-year production run.
Originally supplied by the Autogerma in Bologna Italy in August 1966 this Polo Red 912 - affectionately known as 'Ruby' - spent its early years in Italy before it was subsequently exported to sunny California. Returning to Europe in 2015, the car came to the UK where it received a glass out body restoration including paint in the original factory colour Polo Red. This 912 is largely as it left the factory in 1966 with the factory options of 9303 Antenna, 9307 Speaker, 9101 Chrome Hub Caps with Porsche Crest, 9127 Wing Mirror, 9169 External Thermometer 60mm (very rare but sadly not currently working), 9189 Floor Mats, 9265 Wooden Steering Wheel and its AM/LW Radio.
Only a few non-original upgrades feature including installation of an electric fuel pump and swapping the original unreliable carburettors for more efficient Weber units - both common 912 upgrades. Of special note is the airbox which was custom-made to replicate the look and design of the original, while allowing fitment to the Weber carburettors.
The car presents in very good condition generally with some work required to make it perfect. The Dashboard has been recovered but not as original and the headliner requires minor attention due to general wear and tear. The drivers and passengers window seals would benefit from repair or replacement, and the drivers seat has a split in the vinyl on the base pad, though is hard to see and very small. All in all, a 912 in exemplary condition for its 57 years, and ready to be enjoyed by its next custodian.
