2007 Dodge Viper CC Series 2 Race Car

The Dodge Viper; a piece of American automotive history and an icon of the race track. Initiated by the design legend and automotive powerhouse that was Bob Lutz back in 1988 (book recommendation: Lutz Guts), the Viper was the epitome of raw American power. While the USA has been accustomed to large capacity engines for the best part of a century, few were expecting to find an 8-litre V10 – designed by Lamborghini, no less – nestled under the Viper's long bonnet (or hood).

The Viper was the brainchild of Chrysler's President at the time, Bob Lutz, suggesting to Tom Gale of Chrysler's Design Centre that the company should investigate making a modern version of the Cobra. Gale immediately got to work, presenting Lutz with a clay model of the new car. A full-size metal model was then made and shown – as a concept – to the waiting audiences at the 1989 North American International Motor Show. The positive response was beyond what Lutz and Gale could have hoped and chief engineer Roy Sjoberg set upon immediately developing the car into a production model.

Supplied with a full spares inventory worth circa £40,000

Sjoberg needed to put together a team and reached out to a few dozen colleagues to understand who would be on board. Such was the excitement of the car, Sjoberg had around 300 applications. After some time, he hand-picked 85 of the best engineers to join him on 'Team Viper' and work began. Conveniently, Lamborghini was a subsidiary of Chrysler at the time and so the supercar brand was enlisted to cast a new block specifically for the Viper, and the now-famous V10 was born.

It was unsurprising then, that the Viper headed to the track. Developed by Chrysler in conjunction with race team Reynard Motorsport Oreca, the GT Vipers excelled winning at countless GT events the world over and giving the Viper a racing pedigree the likes of which very few road cars enjoy.

Today, the Viper doesn't rest on its laurel garlands of achievement but continues to compete and defeat much more modern GT machinery in historic and modern GT races across the globe. Such is the case with the Viper VCC113 GT3 020 that was delivered new to KRK Racing of Zolder, Belgium and attained RAC club of Belgium Technical Passport for the start of the 2008 season. VCC113 raced and won at Zolder, Dijon, Spa, Assen, Zandvoort and Dubai for KRK and Bas Koten Racing from April 2008 to 2017.

This history and passport come as part of a substantial history file supplied with the car. Also on file is the FIA Technical form dated 1st May 2009 homologated the car to GT3 specification. Additionally, there is a Viper Competition Service manual, EMCO sequential gearbox service manual as well as a plethora of results, and setup data from the car's racing exploits over 10 years up to 2017.

From the Dubai 24-hour entry of 2017, this Viper was 'rested' for a few years. Refreshed and shaken down in 2022 the Viper won again first time out in the 2-hour British Endurance Championship. It recorded the fastest laps and outstanding pace at Silverstone Classic where a simple hose coming loose stopped the car winning the GT class outright in Endurance Legends Masters. The TV commentator even remarked that of all the cars at Silverstone, the Viper was his 'favourite car' – Lofty praise indeed in an event with the finest race cars on the planet in attendance

This particular car is brought to market due to its owner purchasing a Le Mans 24-hour GTSR Viper. The Viper is supplied with a full spares inventory worth circa £40,000 to enable a full 24-hour race campaign. The engine has only five hours of track time and the same for the EMCO sequential and differential.

Race preparation and support can also be provided by the team who have supported the car in 2022 and are very keen to retain their association with GT3 020.

Please enjoy the in-car footage to appreciate the thrill of the Viper in its natural habitat.
